Staying the Course: Keeping Your New Year Goals Alive

stevehaddadin

As February has come to an end, you are not at a critical spot. You're either 1/12 of the way toward achieving your goals, or you’ve found yourself back at square one. According to Psychology Today, by February 80% of people abandon their New Year’s resolutions. This isn’t surprising, as progress often feels slow, and our brains crave instant gratification in a world dominated by quick-fix solutions and endless entertainment where funny short video clips show up all the time or an item you want is easy to order.

Revisit Your Goals

First, ask yourself: Do I even remember what my goals were? If you wrote them down, great, you’re on the right track. If not, it’s time to get your goals written down. Goals that aren’t written down are just dreams. Putting your goals on paper makes them tangible that you can constantly look back at and build a connection with over time. More importantly, it creates accountability. When you revisit your goals, you’ll feel a sense of internal pressure to make them happen. This is a good kind of pressure, the kind that drives action. It also leads me naturally to the next step: reflecting on the why behind your goals.

Thinking About the Why

Take a moment to think deeply: Why do I want to be fitter? Why do I want to increase my income? Why do I want to further my education? When you clearly define your “why,” it becomes the guiding force behind your actions. Write down your why underneath each goal. Seeing your purpose in writing connects the dots between your goals and the actions required to achieve them. A strong “why” can reignite your motivation and provide clarity on your next steps.

Discuss with Your Support Group

If you haven’t yet formed a support group, now’s the time. A group of like-minded individuals can be a game-changer. Whether it’s friends, colleagues, or on social media, these people will keep you accountable and help you stay focused whether directly or indirectly. One way social media can impact it by seeing their work and feeling a need to stay connected by showing your work. A direct way is by interacting, where your group can offer encourage, share their own experiences, and help you navigate challenges.

Review Your Documentation

If you’re not already documenting your progress, start now. Keeping track of your actions keeps you accountable and helps you identify patterns and areas for improvement. If you documented your progress, now is the time to review your notes. Are there any gaps where you’ve fallen off track? Are your actions aligning with your goals? If not, it’s time to adjust your routine. Documentation also highlights wins, a win no matter how small reinforces the behaviors that are moving you forward. Another thing to look for is whether your actions are improving you or if you need to start considering revising your actions.

Staying the course isn’t about perfection, it’s about persistence. By revisiting your goals, understanding your why, having a support group, and keeping track of your progress, you’ll set yourself up for long-term success. Stay focused, stay accountable, and most importantly, stay the course.
